Record Sales for O-S-D Products

IC Insights reports that record sales were posted for many of the categories in the optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes (O-S-D) product segment. This included lamps, optocouplers, pressure sensors, accelerometers, gyroscope chips, and actuators. They are projecting record sales again for 2016 as well. An area of high growth will be magnetic-field sensors, which include electronic compass chips used in smartphones and other portable systems for navigation and location-identification applications. Combined O-S-D revenues for 2015 reached $66.6 billion USD, accounting for 18.8 percent of the semiconductor industry’s total sales for the year.

Earthquake Causing Production Issues for Altera

The earthquake that struck southern Taiwan on February 6 continues to have an impact on production lead times and inventory support for many of Altera’s product families that are run on their Fab 14 partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC). Lead times on the affected families have extended out to 16+ weeks, with support expected to be limited for the remainder of the first half of 2016. Though not directly affected by the earthquake, other Altera product families are also showing signs of extended lead times and near-term support issues. For example, their MAX3000 and MAX7000 CPLD families are running 10 weeks, while the FLEX 10K FPGA products are 11 weeks. Cyclone I (EP1Cxxx) FPGA’s and MAX II (EPM240, EPM1270, EPM570) CPLD’s are showing 8 weeks, though market inventories are tightening.
